| Special Support Grant(England, Wales and Northern Ireland) |
- Special Support Grant is an income-assessed non-repayable Grant of up to £2,906 in England, £2,906 in Wales (if you started your course between 2006 and 2009) and up to £3,475 in Northern Ireland in 2010/11.
- If you live in Wales and start your course in September 2010 the maximum amount of the Special Support Grant is £5000.
- Students who start/ed their course on or after 1 September 2006 may be entitled to the Grant if, during the academic year, they full into one of these groups:
Are a lone parent
Have a partner who is also a student - and one or both of you are responsible for a child(or a young person aged under 20 who is in full-time education below higher-education level);
Students who have a disability and qualify for the disability premium;
Students who are deaf and qualify for Disabled Students' Allowances;
Have been treated as incapable of work for a continuous period of at least 28 weeks;
Are from abroad and entitled to an Income Support urgent cases payment because you are temporarily without funding for a period of six weeks;
Are waiting to go back to a course after taking agreed time out because of an illness or caring responsibility that has now come to an end.
Other students may be eligible - ask your award making body for advice.
If you become eligible to receive means-tested benefits part way through the academic year, for example you become a lone parent after splitting up from your partner, the Special Support Grant may be awarded in respect of the whole of that year. Consult your award making body if this applies to you.
