Q: I am from Scotland/NI/Wales but am going to study in England. Who will fund me?
A: You cannot receive funding from the English NHS Grants Unit or English Student Loans Company unless you are domiciled in England when you apply for the degree. Therefore you must approach the awards body for the country in which you are resident at the time of applying for your degree.
Q: I am from England but am going to study in Scotland/NI/Wales. Who will fund me?
A: You will be funded by the English NHS Grants Unit/Student Loans Company if you are from the UK, and live in England when applying for the course. This is the case regardless of where in the UK you are going to study.
Q: I am from Scotland/NI/Wales but have lived in England for a few months/years. Will I be funded as an English or Scottish student?
A: You will be funded according to where you live at the time of applying to the course. If you are living and working in England before applying to the course you will be funded as an English student, regardless of where you were born in the UK.
Q: What residency requirements do I need to fulfill to be eligible for NHS and government funding?
A: Generally speaking, to be eligible for funding, students need the following: - To be resident in the UK on the first day of the first year of the course - To have been resident in the UK for three years prior to that day - To have 'settled status' i.e. no restrictions on the amount of time they can stay in the UK
However, the rules around residency are complicated and there are many exceptions to the above. See the UKCISA website for more information.
