- For the first four years SAAS will pay your tuition fees.
- From fifth year on your fees will be paid by the Scottish Government Health Directorate but you still apply to SAAS.
Living costs
For the first four years, depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible to apply for:
- Young Students’ Bursary
- Independent Students' Bursary
- Additional Loan
- Student Loan for maintenance(if you live at home but do your elective abroad ask SAAS if you can receive the higher away from home rate of loan)
- Adult Dependant’s Grant
- Lone Parent's Grant
- Travelling Expenses for medical students
- Care Leavers’ Grant
- Disabled Students’ Allowance
In the fifth and later years of your course, depending on your circumstances, you may be able to apply for:

What financial help might I get if I study in England, Wales or Northern Ireland?
Fees
- In 2011/12 Universities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland will charge tuition fees of £3,375 for the year for medical courses.
- You’ll be able to apply to SAAS for a student loan for fees which is non income-assessed for the first four years of your course.
- From your fifth year on your fees will be paid in full by the Scottish Government Health Directorate but you still apply to SAAS.

In the fifth and later years of your course, depending on your personal circumstances, you'll be eligible to apply for the same support as if you had studied in Scotland.
What other financial help might I get?
- University Bursary Schemes. Your University may ask SAAS for information about your application for student support to help decide your bursary entitlement but you and your family will need to sign the consent form that SAAS will send to you for this to happen.
- Access to Learning Fund/Support Funds/Financial Contingency Fund.
- University Funds – some Universities have their own Hardship Funds.Check your University’s website to see what is available.
