Withdrawing Money Abroad while Abroad on an Elective
- Most bank accounts charge a minimum fee per transaction for cashpoint (ATM) withdrawals abroad
- To avoid ATM charges or carrying large sums of cash take some traveller’s cheques (although if you are travelling to remote areas these may be difficult to change)
- To avoid excessive bank charges, withdraw cash from ATMs in regular amounts to last you a few days at a time
- Some banks charge more than others. Before you travel, open a bank account (e.g. the Nationwide current account) which doesn’t charge for overseas transactions
- For the best accounts for withdrawing money abroad check the Travel section of the related moneysaving website
