Access Agreement Bursaries
Access Agreement Bursaries
- Access Agreement bursaries are available for English domiciled students starting courses in medical schools in England from 2006/07 onwards.
- Universities wanting to charge more than £1,345 in 2011/12 for a course have to provide extra non-repayable bursaries to students who are receiving the full Maintenance Grant or Special Support Grant. This applies to all University Medical Schools who will be charging £3,375 in 2011/12.
- Minimum bursary is £338 in 2011/12 but might be much much more than this. So “shop around” when you are deciding where you want to study medicine.
- The Bursaries can be cash or can be a 'discounted service' eg accommodation.
- You must complete the 'consent to share' part of the student finance application form in England,Wales and Northern Ireland to be considered for a bursary.
- If you are a Scottish domiciled student studying outside Scotland the Student Awards Agency for Scotland will send you a form to complete to give your consent in a similar way.
- English Universities are being encouraged to offer the bursaries to eligible Northern Irish, Welsh and Scottish students but check with your chosen Universities to confirm that they are doing so.
- EU students may also be eligible - make sure you sign the Bursary consent section of the student finance application form. An additional form will then be sent to you so that you can give income details which can be shared with your University.
- Universities in Northern Ireland have similar arrangements from 2006/7 onwards.
- Universities in Wales also have a similar scheme from 2007/8. But for new students in Wales in 2011/12 the Welsh National Bursary Scheme has been combined into the amount of Assembly Learning Grant or Special Support Grant you may receive. See the entry - Welsh Bursary Scheme in the A-Z if you are at a Welsh medical school. However your University may still be offering additional bursaries so contact them directly for information.
- New students in England,Wales and Northern Ireland can compare what various Universities have on offer on the online calculators on the student finance sites.
- Scottish Universities may also offer bursaries. Check the Scottish Institutions Bursary Map link.
