Part time work
Q: Is it advisable to work part-time whilst studying for a medical degree?
A: This is really a personal decision, depending on your academic progress, circumstances and commitments. However, if you can work, this will boost your income and (if you can find medically related work) may enhance your CV. As a general rule it is best to work part time in your early years, before placements make this difficult.
Q: Will my part-time wages affect the amount of bursary and loan I get?
A: No. Income from working part-time whilst studying is not taken into account for student support purposes.
Q: Do students have to pay tax? Can I claim back what I have paid and if so how?
A: Yes. As a student you do have to pay tax, but only if you earn over £6,035 in a year. If you have paid too much tax you can claim it back.
