Q: When the Student Loans Company and NHS assess my income, will they use my income or that of my parents?
A: If you are assessed as 'independent' by the LEA/NHS then only your income or that of your partner, if you have one, will be assessed. If you are assessed as a 'dependent' student then how much you get will depend on your parents' income.
See www.money4medstudents.org/content.asp?id=238 for the criteria for independent and dependent student status.
Q: For student support purposes can you become 'independent' throughout the course/year?
A: You can become independent throughout the course, if you have a baby or get married, for example.
However, you cannot become independent during the academic year. Your status is assessed according to your circumstances on the first day of the academic year (1st September in most cases).
Q: My family's financial circumstances have changed. Now my funding is not enough. What can I do?
A: You can apply for a reassessment of student funding if your household income changes significantly throughout the year, or if your personal circumstances change. Contact your award making body to inform them of the change. |
