The funding sources listed below are from searches on www.rdinfo.org.uk and using Funderfinder software (available in some local libraries and university student welfare services or student unions). Please do not apply to funders unless you are certain you match their criteria.
Awards may change or be withdrawn without notice and the funding providers only fund electives if specifically stated. Some offer more general funding under which your elective may qualify depending on the country and subject area of your elective.
The National Birthday Trust Fund
Administered by WellBeing of Women, the Fund awards a minimum of ten bursaries of £1,000 each towards the expenses of students going on a formal elective whose projects are within the areas of obstetrics, gynaecology, neonatology (but not paediatrics) or midwifery. Last year there were 140 applications, from which 27 bursaries were awarded.
Application deadline for 2009 - 2010 is 6th March.

Edward Boyle Memorial Trust Medical Elective Bursaries offer £500 to enable medical students in Britain to gain practical experience in developing Commonwealth countries (particularly those that are Least Developed or Specially Disadvantaged) and, by doing so, to help understaffed hospitals in those countries. The Bursaries are intended to cover part of the student's travel, subsistence and local costs, and payment will be made directly to the students selected. Closing date: end January.
The Institute of Medical Ethics
Offer 10 bursaries of up to £500 each to support Medical Student Electives, or exceptionally Special Study Modules. Application is by email letter annually in February, explaining the project’s relevance to medical ethics and the reasons why a bursary is requested. An outline study protocol and project budget should be included or attached. Successful applicants are expected to submit an elective report. British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons
The Association offer around 10 awards of £500 annually towards the expenses of a medical student who wishes to undertake research, travel, or an elective in a subject related to plastic surgery.

The British Association of Dermatologists annually offers an elective prize of £500 sponsored by LEO Pharmaceuticals Ltd. This prize is open to any undergraduate medical student studying at a UK university who proposes to undertake an elective in an overseas dermatology department. Preference will be given to students undertaking a research project. Applications must be made before the start of the elective period.

Vacations scholarships for Scottish students or those with a Scottish parent or students who completed 2 years of secondary education in Scotland. Will fund projects of up to 8 weeks in the UK or abroad.
