NHS Bursaries
| Who is entitled to an NHS Bursary?
UK students
- Medical students in the fifth year of their medical course onwards.
- Intercalating medical students from the fifth year of study onwards (which may not be the fifth year of the medical course).
- Second degree medical students on a four year accelerated degree course from the second year of their course onwards(England and Welsh domiciled students only).
- Second degree medical students domiciled in England, Wales or Scotland doing the full standard medical degree course when they reach the fifth year of the medical course onwards. Currently this does not apply if you normally live in Northern Ireland although the situation is under review.
- Second degree medical students doing a shortened standard medical degree when they reach the fifth year of the medical course onwards. Again this does not apply if you normally live in Northern Ireland.
EU students
EU students can apply for payment of tuition fees only at the same stage of their particular course as UK students.
Who administers the Bursaries?
- NHS Students Grant Unit administers the Bursaries for English domiciled students and EU students studying in England.
- But you’ll still need to apply to your LA for the non-income assessed student loan for maintenance.

| Get your application in as soon as you can. There have been considerable delays in recent years, particularly in England, in the processing of applications. It is worth checking the NHS Student Grants Unit website very regularly for the up-to-date position with regard to the rates payable etc. |

- NHS Wales Student Awards Unit (based within National Leadership and Innovation Agency for Healthcare - NLIAH - follow link to NHS Bursaries and Student Awards on the left of the NLIAH homepage) administers the Bursaries for Welsh domiciled students and EU students studying in Wales. But you’ll still need to apply to your LA for the non-income assessed student loan for maintenance.
- SAAS administers the Bursaries on behalf of the Scottish Government Health Department for Scottish domiciled students and EU students studying in Scotland.You apply using the ordinary undergraduate application form (SAS3) but tick the box for Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) funding.
- You’ll also need to apply to SAAS for the non-income assessed student loan for maintence.
- The ELBs administer the NHS Bursaries on behalf of the DHSPSS for Northern Irish domiciled students and EU students studying in Northern Ireland. You’ll be sent information on how to apply by your ELB.
- You’ll also need to apply to your ELB for the non-income assessed student loan for maintenance.
- EU students apply to the Belfast Education and Library Board.
What financial support might you be entitled to?
You can apply for:
- Fees only Bursary which is non income-assessed.
- Full Bursary which includes :
Tuition fees – non-income assessed Living cost support – mostly income-assessed | |
| Always apply for the Fees Only NHS Bursary to get your tuition fees paid. You don’t have to apply for the Full NHS Bursary, which covers income-assessed living cost support, if you don’t want to. |
