From the left hand menu you can
Check what advice is normally available from your University/Student Union Advice Centre or medical school, or
E-mail your enquiry, in confidence, to our Independent Money Adviser, or
Browse additional advice on a variety of topics.
One of the reasons we set up this website is that when we talked to medical students it was clear that a lot of them had money problems but that many found it difficult to seek advice from their University or Student Union Advice Centre.
There were all sorts of reasons for this:
- Some medical schools are based in hospitals rather than on campus.
- Some Student Advice Centres have opening hours which clash with clinical attachments.
- Some medical students are worried about confidentiality.
- Others think their local Advice Centre won’t understand the particular difficulties of medical students.
Interestingly, when we asked a sample of medical students to make an appointment for Money Advice at their Student Advice Centre, some were pleasantly surprised by how helpful they were – although some Advice Centres proved to be more geared up to provide Money Advice to medical students than others.
The best Student Advice Centres can not only provide helpful information and advice but also undertake case work on your behalf and even represent you or advocate on your behalf if things have got really serious, for instance negotiating on your behalf with creditors or representing you during formal Appeal procedures or Tribunal hearings.
That’s why you’ll find the two options here. If you need to talk to someone about money you can:
EITHER check what kind of information and advice is likely to be available at your local Student Advice Centre and what their confidentiality policy is – based on our research
OR e mail your question, in confidence, to our Independent Money Adviser, who will aim to provide appropriate information and advice
Whichever option you choose we hope you’ll find that explaining your financial situation to a Money Adviser will help you think through what your options are and help you begin to gain more control over your financial situation.
